Spectacular instructive video. Thanks so much.
The benefits of cutting down to a leaf node is you can influence the direction of the new growth , same in your lavender pruning video you miss out on opportunity to enhance growth patterns .
I transplanted a hydrangea to my backyard last year, where I thought it would get a little more sun. I’ve been watching it this year and trying to remember which variety it was. It just started blooming a few days ago. Your video reminded me…it’s Little Lime Punch!! Thanks!! You saved me from sorting through my plant tags 😂. Great information as usual!
I also have a woody lavender plant and I wasn’t too shocked at yours 😅they looked stunning when in full bloom. Perhaps you could add something like a periwinkle or salvia amongst your lavender to hide the wood. Love this video it was so helpful !
Thank you for sharing with us!! I love ❤️ your garden and im loving some new flowers coming out in 2025 too!!😊
One can root the cuttings in water, if desired.
I never knew to break them off so just gently pulled the dead bloom off. My Lillies have spread like crazy and are gorgeous. I'll start doing what you illustrated and maybe I'll get even more. I only started out with a few stems I transplanted from a family camp and now have at least a 6' spread on each side of my doorway . 🥰
You can never have too many hydrangeas. I’m at 23 at last count. I like to experiment with trimming a few branches before they bloom. You can get a layered effect with smaller later blooms coming later. It helps with the flopping too.
Will you are correct, and I’m thinking of adding more Tiny Quick Fires to fill up that space instead of perennials now. 👍 Your experiment with trimming branches is intriguing. 🤔 😊
Another fantastic video Laura! Thank you!
Thank you so much Blake! 😊💜
Love your garden tours! You did such a great job recovering the woody lavendar. The topiary looks so unique, and the two level effect w/ the lower lavender is stunning! I am currently eyeing the tiny quick fire hydrangeas for my garden as one can never have enough hydrangeas! Would love to see an update on all of your hydrangeas one day (especially the pinky winkies!!) ❤❤❤
Thank you Elise! 😊 Yes, I was so happy I could save those woody lavenders! 💜 I love these Tiny Quick Fires so much, and now am wondering if I should just fill in that entire space with them. 🤔😀 Not sure if you’ve seen, but I have a Hydrangeas Playlist where all of my hydrangea videos are in one place. There’s a Pinky Winky Garden video, and a video on all of my panicle hydrangeas that I just filmed last August. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/p/PLenOueHl62OxPv6Efs5py02jVNLNZZG6u&si=d173SQQdIFqCd8y8 🌸
@@GardenSanity YES! FILL THE SPACE!!!!! GO FOR IT!!!!!!! ❤❤
@eliselook 😂🤣 Indeed I think talking this through with you convinced me, so yes this is now a plan! Thank you! ❤️
I always enjoy your videos! Can you compare Tiny quick fire vs Fire light tidbit hydrangeas? Thank you!
You read my mind Grace! 😀 Yes, I plan on doing a comparison between the two varieties as there are interesting differences! Stay tuned! 💛
@@GardenSanity Thank you! I got a firelight tidbit a couple of months ago; it's so cute and just started flowering these days 😍 And I also saw Tiny quick fire in Homedepot and wondered what are the differences.. So thank you in advance for doing the comparison video!
How fun that your dusty miller perenialised! Did you do anything special to over winter them?
No, I didn’t do anything special at all, except they had mulch as soil protection. I do think they did well because this foundation bed is close to the house and stays warmer than other garden beds during Winter that are further out in the yard and subject to drying Winter winds. 🤔 However, I’m planning on dividing and replanting this Dusty Miller in all of the beds, so this will be another experiment to see if they come back! 🤗
Far from insignificant 😂😉 Yes, mine came back in PA also this year, although mine are mostly in shade, and foliage looks a little different, so not sure if it's variety or amount of sun .?
Yes, these flowers definitely are not insignificant! 😂 If Dusty Miller is grown in shade, there will be fewer fuzzy hairs on the leaves which is what gives the plants their silvery color. So that could possibly be a reason the foliage looks different. (Or like you said, a different variety.) 👍
WOW
😀🌿💛
We have the same variety of dusty miller. I garden in 6b in Canada and it does come back every year especially if planted in sunny locations even in the winter time. I don’t care too much about the flower so I cut them, I pinch them as well to make it a mounded look.
Glad to hear it’s a perennial for you in Canada! 👍 I’ve always loved the pretty foliage and how it softens a garden, especially during our hot Summers: it looks cooling and fresh. I will try pinching mine in the future, especially for these in front of the short hydrangeas. Thanks for the tip!
Lavender Phenomenal looks and smells beautifully!
I agree Kathryn! I wish everyone could inhale the wonderful scent through the video! 💜
I had a blooming dusty miller last season and when the flowers started to look tired, I cut them back and there were more fresh blooms not long after. The plant flowered all summer and into the fall. A nice treat :D I was bummed it didn't come back, but we had a pretty severe frost that damaged many of my plants.
Oh Jean now I’m excited for more flowers! 🌼 I still need to dig up and divide, but the flowers are - like you said - a nice treat! Thanks for letting me know! 💛 I think these plants stayed pretty warm in Winter being close to the house, so I’ll see how they handle being out further in the yard, if they survive next Winter.
Mine is shedding all of them 😔 but there's only like 3 few green ones poking threw. Iam worried. 99% is brown and falling. 😢
Yard looks GREAT!!!
Thank you so much Latoya! 😊
Can u cut lavender down in July!
For me, cats pajamas didn’t do well the second season for me, the third season the first flush was excellent. However, they always fizzle out after the first flush an do not respond to a cut back. But I love them so much that I keep them in my garden.
I think I’ll end up keeping them like you’re doing, even if I don’t get good repeat blooming, as I agree with you that their first flush is always beautiful! 💜
ok! my new favorite channel!
I bought around 30 one gallon size pots last year for hedges around my porch. It’s growing nicely but slow, I think. It seems like it’s growing in all directions. I want to grow them as hedges. It looks kind of flimsy right now. How long should I wait to start pruning?
Great video and i like your sense of humour.
When & how often to fertilize this?
Thank you for this info. I will get busy dead heading today!
Thank you for showing us how to prune Lavender! I just planted three plants and I usually don't like to prune plants because I would probably hurt or kill the plants but in this case it's a good thing to cut it back!
My lavender is in a pot. Should I bring it inside. Prune in fall?
What plants deter rabbits
Thanks for the information. I was wondering if pruning in the summer will give you more flowers.
Laura, great video, thank you for sharing. I discovered caryopteris several years ago. We're zone 6B. Have Longwood Blue & Dark Knight varieties. Love them for the reasons you mentioned... blooms late summer into fall, just when plants are looking haggard, and only color seems to be mums. Deer resistant & easy to grow. I prune back in spring to keep them manageable size and they are vigorous growers. Bees LOVE them; suggest planting away from doors if that bothers you. Happy 4th! 🇺🇸
Where do you cut them?
Look up the ice plant prior to purchase...its very invasive.
Amazing advice thanks so much from 🇬🇧 UK. I have subscribed and will follow your channel from now on 👍
My question is how do you become a Proven Wiinners trial garden? I live about 10 minutes from Walter's Gardens and what are the criteria?
They reached out to me. There are many gardeners here on RUclips who help “trial” plants for them, and we are each located in different parts of the US - each in climates and hardiness zones that are different from Michigan (where they are based). Being in a different area of the country helps Walters Gardens better learn how their plants perform under all kinds of conditions. 🌞❄️⛈️🌪️💦🌨️
I made the exact same mistake you did thinking the bigger the lavender got the better it looked, until now 3 years later and they are like woody trees... oh well, thanks to your video now I know!
What did you decide to do with the woody lavender? I have woody lavender and I am wondering if I should remove and replace the plants in September.
Hi Laura - love your style of video's and the props are so good that I remember what your teaching. Amazing-thank you!
You’re most welcome, and thanks for your feedback too! 😊 So glad the videos are helpful, as that is always my main goal. ❤️
Very interesting ! Our Sea Holly is so unique that passersby ask about it a lot. In our xeriscape (mostly),bunny-resistant garden,it is a standout for sure. Tried a "Knockout Rose in a tall container, but,oh my,full of disease even though it bloomed its little head off ! Do not wish to spray it Q 2 wks.,so out it went. Any advice on a different choice ? Thks. so much,Laura. 🌞
I walk over to my Sea Holly every day to enjoy those flowers! 💙 Knockout Roses can be very tough with black spot. It personally drives me nuts when it happens. So I don’t blame you on wanting something more disease resistant. For containers, Drift Roses are beautiful! I have a few videos about them, showing my Peach Drift Roses and my Popcorn Drift Roses. Deadheading isn’t necessary (though I occasionally do it), and they bloom early in the season and keep going. They are shorter plants. The leaves seem much healthier than Knockouts, though I will spray mine occasionally with Neem Oil as a precaution. I really love them for their minimal care. 👍
Gracias 🙏
My pleasure!
Thank interesting my work tommrow
😀 I hope the work is enjoyable and not too hot! 🌼
The flowers are lovely but why did you guys make your garden bed into the shape of a male appendage? Is it like an inside joke between you and your hubby? I know it would make my husband and I giggle every time we saw it. 😅 but, that’s just because we’re both still in middle school mentally lol
Hi Sue, that’s not what we did, and there’s no inside joke. However, always happy to make others laugh! 😀
@@GardenSanity it did make me giggle 🤭 love your channel btw. Watch you all the time 😊

can you please recommend any mail order nurseries? I'm looking for Delosperma Razzle Dazzle and Arizona Apricot blanket. Thanks for your help. I enjoy and find your posts very informative.
Thanks for your feedback Philip! Yes, I have a video sharing my favorite mail order nurseries: ruclips.net/video/qc4wj-Fpc2g/видео.htmlsi=Kxxu9Xmr6VxBNAKH 👍 I purchased the Arizona Apricot Blanket Flowers via Great Garden Plants. I see they are currently on sale. Delosperma Razzle Dazzle won’t be available for sale until next year, 2025. (Walters Gardens sent me an “advance” Razzle Dazzle to trial in my garden this year.) 🌺 I hope this helps.
I always say Aphid, A rhyming with able, ace etc.
Thanks Mark - I’m doing my best to say Aphid correctly. I still catch myself sometimes! 😀
Great info!
Thanks Kelley - glad you enjoyed it!
Great video and information on each drought tolerant plant. We have only watered the flowerbeds twice so far this year in Ireland. We have a lot of fairly drought tolerant plants in our garden like agapanthus, alstroemeria, salvia nemorosa caradonnas, daylilies, lilies, crocosmias, coneflowers, coreopsis, rudbeckia, gaura, gaillardia, cosmos, ice plants, salvia shrubs, phygelius, shasta daisies, campanula, centaurea, acanthus bears breechs and African daisies.
Wow Nicholas - your flowerbeds sound beautiful with a lot of color and texture! What a great selection of plants! 🌺 I may have said this before, but I envy the climate in Ireland for gardening. Here in New Jersey, we are entering the humid soupy season with heat waves. 🥵
@@GardenSanity We gardeners don't know how lucky we are with our weather here in Ireland. I have to plant two more drought tolerant plants called kniphofia later this evening.
@nicholasryan5401 Kniphofia is another perennial on my list - there’s so many varieties to choose from!
Laura the plants are gorgeous!!! May I make a recommendation ( as your enabling friend 😂): Nepeta chartreuse on the loose!!! It is gorgeous and the color is yellowish chartreuse and it would contrast really well with both the blue and green plants plus the purple flowers create such an amazing contrast!! A must try!!! I bought two and boy, so they glow! Thank you for your wonderful video 🌸
So glad you enjoyed the video Chris! Yes, I’ve heard good things about Chartreuse on the Loose. Thanks for the recommendation - I always love your suggestions, even if they initially end up on my long list first. 🤣🌺
